This cherry console desk & sofa table with integrated storage for a computer monitor is one of the most satisfying custom design builds I’ve done in a long time! Living on a house boat, space was at a premium for this client and beyond being made of solid cherry, I designed the desk to have integrated door pulls to match the clients existing wood work.
I was surprised to learn at the delivery that the famous Sleepless in Seattle houseboat was just a few floating doors across the dock!
For the hide-away monitor solution, a Nexus 21 pop-up lift was used. I’ve done a few projects now using this incredibly smooth and well engineered hardware and I’m always delightfully surprised by how easy they are to assemble and operate.
Because the center desk portion would need to be usable while being partially extended, I opted to use maple drawer runners as opposed to ball bearing slides. I sourced them from Rockler and was very pleased (once I put a few coats of paste wax on the inside member) just how smooth, but stable the desk top operated.
Finally, the piece was finished with 3 coats of Osmo Polyx Oil 3043. I’ve been using this product exclusively for nearly 8 years and I can’t tell you what a game changer it is. This stuff applies easily, is extremely durable, and water resistant after just a week of cure time.
